Julian is a sound and communication expert, author and international keynote speaker whose mission is to help people and organisations to listen better and create healthier and more effective sound, including speaking. He is author of the books How to be Heard and Sound Business.
Julian’s five TED talks have been watched more than 150 million times. How to speak so that people want to listen is the sixth-most-viewed TED talk of all time. Julian is regularly featured in the world’s media from BBC TV and radio to NBC's Today Show, and has guested on dozens of leading global podcasts. He has been honoured with both Toastmasters International’s Golden Gavel Award and the International Listening Associations's Special Recognition award.
In 2003 Julian founded The Sound Agency, an audio branding company that asks and answers the question “how does your brand sound?” He created and helped launch Moodsonic®, a range of biophilic soundscapes to enhance wellbeing and productivity in workspaces.
Julian’s love of sound stems from his early experiences as a musician. He was a drummer for indie bands The Transmitters, Fish Turned Human and Missing Presumed Dead and recorded vinyl and two 1981 John Peel Sessions.
Before The Sound Agency, Julian founded, grew and sold leading UK contract publisher TPD, during which time he was chairman of the Association of Publishing Agencies, a director of the Periodical Publishers Association, chairman of PPAinteractive and chairman of the UK government’s Digital Content Forum. In 2002, he received the PPA Chairman’s Award for services to the UK magazine publishing industry.
Julian is a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Marketors, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and a long time musician, remembering with affection his two 1981 BBC John Peel sessions (the bands were Transmitters and Missing Presumed Dead) and scoring Sounds magazine’s single of the week with Fish Turned Human. He lives in Orkney, Scotland with four-time world champion martial artist Jane Majendie and their daughters Holly and Sapphire, and is working on his third book, Everything Is Sound, to be published in Spring 2024
We teach our children how to read and write, but not how to speak and listen. Conscious listening is rare, and never has it been more needed in the world; at the same time, millions miss out on the potential of the amazing instrument we all play – the human voice – and struggle to speak powerfully.
My vision is to transform the world by inspiring people to listen consciously and speak powerfully.
Listening is the doorway to understanding. It is crucial for the survival of democracy and civil society, which rely on enlightened disagreement – while powerful speaking liberates us to make a difference and be known for who we are.
My company, The Sound Agency, has been helping companies to listen better for over a decade. I want to do the same for every person in the world.
My vision in a nutshell: a world that listens consciously and can express itself beautifully.
