The organising idea

One system, not four training courses.

Communication skills build in a pyramid. Listening forms the base. Speaking sits in the middle. Presenting sits at the peak. And the whole pyramid stands inside sound, the medium every one of those skills travels through.

Most leadership development starts at the top of the pyramid and never touches the base, which is why so much of it fails to hold.

The four elements

The foundation

Conscious listening

Listening is not hearing. It's the meaning we make from sound, through filters we never chose. Change the filters and you change what you're able to understand, which changes every conversation you have.

The middle

Powerful speaking

The voice is an instrument, and almost nobody is taught to play it. Register, timbre, prosody, pace, pitch and volume are learnable, and so are the four things that make speech worth listening to.

The peak

Masterful presenting

Speaking to many is speaking, with the stakes raised and the feedback removed. It rests on the other two skills, which is why presentation training alone so rarely holds.

The space it happens in

Soundscaping

Every conversation happens inside a soundscape, and that soundscape decides more than anyone admits: whether people can think, whether they can hear each other, whether they want to stay.

Why it has to be one system

You can't speak well to people you haven't understood. That single sentence is the whole argument. We always speak into somebody else's listening, so the quality of what we say is governed by the quality of our attention to who we're saying it to. Treating speaking as a performance skill, taught separately from listening, produces confident people who still aren't heard.

The same is true of the space. A team that can't hear each other in an open-plan office isn't a team with a communication culture problem. It's a team in a badly designed room. Soundscaping isn't a decorative fourth element: it's the condition the other three operate in.

The Framework holds the four together so that work on one supports the others, and so that an organisation can see where its real gap is rather than buying the training it's used to buying.

Where to meet it

As a keynote

An hour for a conference audience, on whichever of the four the event needs most.
See speaking

As a workshop

A working session for a team, from 90 minutes to two days, with everyone speaking rather than watching.
See workshops

As a daily practice

The app turns the Framework into something you do each morning, for less than $1 a day.

As a cohort programme

The Sound Leader takes senior leaders through all four over a cohort, with Julian in the room.
